From centralist history to regional history. Venezuelan historiographical challenges in the era of artificial intelligence (AI)

Abstract

This study addresses the historiographical challenge of transitioning from a centralist historical tradition to a regional history approach in Venezuela, integrating the new analytical capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data. The central objective of the research was to analyze the methodological evolution of the discipline and the challenges posed by technology in this context. The theoretical framework is built upon the contrast between Caracas-centric historiography and the proposal of the regional school of Zulia state, championed by historians such as Germán Cardozo Galué. This perspective requires the study of local economic structures (Colmenares, 1989) and microhistory (Troconis de Veracoechea, 2010), which focuses on the daily activities of the community. From the perspective of Digital Humanities (DH), this research is framed within the view of technology as an aid to human intellect (Bode, 2018), underscoring the historian's responsibility to formulate the correct epistemological questions (Drucker, 2013) to interrogate the data generated by AI. The methodology adopted a qualitative, analytical-interpretive approach. Literature review and critical content analysis were employed on sources distributed across three essential categories: historiographical, conceptual, and technological/ethical. Among the most noteworthy results, the urgent need to overcome the centralist perspective is confirmed, and it is highlighted that AI, through techniques such as advanced OCR and Machine Learning, has the capacity to accelerate heuristics and make the inclusion of a massive peripheral documentary corpus viable. However, this research concludes that the challenge lies in the ethical and methodological realm: the application of AI must be subordinated to the theoretical requirements of Regional History.

    El presente estudio aborda el desafío historiográfico de transitar desde una tradición histórica centralista hacia el enfoque de la Historia Regional en Venezuela, integrando las nuevas capacidades analíticas de la Inteligencia Artificial (IA) y el Big Data. El objetivo central de la investigación fue analizar la evolución metodológica de la disciplina y los retos que impone la tecnología en este contexto. La fundamentación teórica se construye sobre el contraste entre la historiografía centrada en Caracas y la propuesta de la escuela regional del estado Zulia, impulsada por historiadores como Germán Cardozo Galué. Esta perspectiva exige el estudio de las estructuras económicas locales (Colmenares, 1989) y la Microhistoria (Troconis de Veracoechea, 2010), que se enfoca en el quehacer diario de la colectividad. Desde las Humanidades Digitales (HD), la investigación se enmarca en la visión de la tecnología como un coadyuvante del intelecto humano (Bode, 2018), subrayando la responsabilidad del historiador de formular las preguntas epistemológicas correctas (Drucker, 2013) para interrogar a los datos que arroja la IA. La metodología adoptó un enfoque cualitativo, de naturaleza analítico-interpretativa. Se empleó la revisión bibliográfica y el análisis de contenido crítico sobre fuentes distribuidas en tres categorías esenciales: historiográficas, conceptuales, y tecnológicas/éticas. Entre los resultados más destacables se confirma la urgencia de superar la visión centralista y se destaca que la IA, mediante técnicas como OCR avanzado y Machine Learning, tiene la capacidad de acelerar la heurística y hacer viable la inclusión de un corpus documental periférico masivo. Sin embargo, se concluye al cierre de esta investigación que el desafío radica en el plano ético y metodológico: la aplicación de la IA debe estar subordinada a las exigencias teóricas de la Historia Regional.
