Abstract

The study analyzes the environmental and social impacts of agriculture in the province of La Pampa from 1990 to the present. It focuses on the expansion of agribusiness and its impact on the territory, including agricultural intensification, the shift of livestock farming, soil degradation, and water pollution.

The research adopts a qualitative methodology, based on interviews with producers and agronomists, along with the analysis of secondary sources such as agricultural censuses and environmental reports. Negative effects identified include the deforestation of the Pampean forest, soil erosion, excessive use of agrochemicals, and biodiversity loss. Additionally, social impacts such as the disappearance of small producers, rural depopulation, and health issues related to pesticide use are observed.

The interviewees argue that agriculture does not generate negative impacts if good agricultural practices are applied. However, the study highlights the concentration of capital in the hands of large economic groups, including foreign entities, and the exclusion of small producers. Provincial regulations aim to mitigate some effects through laws on agrochemical use and waste management.

In conclusion, the agricultural model has brought profound changes to La Pampa, with economic benefits for some sectors but also significant environmental and social consequences. The study recommends advancing policies on agroecology and sustainability to minimize these impacts.
